Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 2026

Tip of the Tongue is a personal word-finding practice tool for stroke survivors. This privacy policy explains what data the app handles and how.

Data we collect

None. Tip of the Tongue does not collect, transmit, or share any personal data. Everything you enter — your word list, descriptions, practice results — is stored only on your device using the device's built-in local database.

Data that stays on your device

The app stores the following information locally:

This data never leaves your device. It is not backed up to iCloud (iCloud backup is explicitly excluded for this app). It is not sent to any server. There is no account, no login, and no internet connection required or used.

Microphone and speech recognition

During practice you can tap “Say it” to have the app check the word you say aloud. If you allow it, the app listens through the microphone and converts your speech to text entirely on your device, using Apple’s on-device speech recognition. The app requires on-device recognition; it does not fall back to server-based transcription.

No audio is recorded, saved, or transmitted. The microphone is used only while you are actively answering a word, the sound itself is never written to storage, and the recognised text is compared against the word you are practising and then discarded. Granting microphone access is optional — you can practise entirely by typing or by tapping “Got it” / “Didn’t get it”, exactly as before.

On-device AI clues

When you ask for a clue, the app generates one using Apple Intelligence’s on-device foundation model, which runs locally on your iPhone. Your word and your own description of it are given to that on-device model to write the clue.

Nothing is sent to Anthropic, OpenAI, Apple, or any other company, and no internet connection is used. The clue is produced on your phone and shown only to you. This feature appears only on iPhones that support Apple Intelligence; where it is unavailable, the app simply hides it.

Clues are written by AI, and AI is sometimes wrong. Most clues are accurate, but one can occasionally contain a detail that is not true. Please treat a clue as a nudge to help you remember a word — not as a fact to rely on. If a clue sounds wrong, ignore it and ask for another.

Notifications

If you grant notification permission, the app schedules local reminders on your device to prompt daily practice. These notifications are generated entirely on-device and are not sent through any external service.

Third-party services

Tip of the Tongue does not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services.

Children

The app does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children.

Medical disclaimer

Tip of the Tongue is a practice aid, not a medical device. It does not diagnose or treat any condition. For a personalised rehabilitation programme, consult a qualified speech-language pathologist.
